Is red the new black?

With Spring racing season well under way in Melbourne-town, the attention has truly turned to the fashion. Colour-blocking is all I have heard these last few weeks!
This has been the topic of recent conversations but I just wanted to turn my attention to the race day that just passed. A traditionally black and white day, a.k.a Derby Day was a fabulous day spent basking in the afternoon sun (when it decided to finally come out).
However, there were mixed reactions as to what should have been worn on this particular Saturday. Is it a crime to not be wearing black and white?
Two years ago I wore a peach-coloured dress and accessorised all in black. I thought, it is Spring, I love bright colours and I wear black all the time! Clearly wearing a white dress was never factored in to the thought process.
This year, discussions commenced in August as to what colours would be worn on this very day. Would it be black or white? Would you wear black and then accessorise with a different colour? Would you wear canary yellow?
All sorts of suggestions were made over a tapas dinner however with eight girls screaming over the top of each other as to what they thought suited the day best offered no solutions.
Yes, traditionally it is a Derby Day thing to wear black or white but I saw a bunch of stunning chicks rocking red or looking like they had just stepped out of Vogue sporting a coral number! Sure they had black or white accessories but their colourful outfit could not be faulted.
I will admit, I did see a lot more girls wearing black and white but accessorising with red. Red fascinators, shoes, lippy and slicked nails made a statement.
Either way, everyone was glammed up and looking smashing! I’m torn between what should have been worn and what was worn. I personally wore black this year – this included frock, fascinator, bling and shoes – however have worn a colour before.
I’m sure there will be a massive difference on Crown Oaks Day that’s in 2 sleeps time! Colour-blocking, as my aunty so willingly throws around will well and truly make an appearance – and I think it’s here to stay.
