Oh the Cargo

November 18th 2008 06:41

So... I was almost certain that the pants with the 17 massive pockets had their time to shine and were now waiting to be recycled as fashion in the next 30 years – clearly I was wrong. Either I woke up 30 years in the future or people still have the love for their cozy pants and refuse to stash them away...I am waffling on about the beloved “cargo pant” that hit the scene in the 90’s and where everybody had to have a pair regardless of age or gender.

However, I am scarily seeing them weasel their way back into town with a couple of stray members of society prancing around in their olive green or light stone-wash cargo pants. I can understand maybe the ¾ quarter length ones for older women at the beach but I am finding it difficult to comprehend the full length & flared attire for the young lassies of today.

There was a period of time there at the start of the year where cargo pants just above the ankles were floating around – they tied up about 20 cm above the ankle and were worn with heels – these were funky and provided an alternative to wearing jeans out all the time to dancing venues, if you were a no-dress kind of chick – but just because these classy numbers were back on the catwalks does not justify the wearing of ‘any’ old cargo pants you have lying around the house or at the back of the cob-webbed cupboard.

For now I think the safest option would be to leave the army printed / dark olive and light stone-wash cargos at home in the cupboard for another couple of years where you can then safely bring the out again to play and they can also have their time to shine (for the 2nd time in history). Wearing them now-a-days with runners or thongs is not that flash and there are about a billion different styles jeans on the market you can purchase theses days that suits everyone’s needs so there is no excuse for wearing your odd trousers.

Sure the cargos were handy as you did not even need a handbag due to the lovely addition of a pocket 3 cm away from the next but it is best to be safe than sorry so this calls for either another pair of pants until the wearable handbag hits our streets again.

I hadn't noticed this, will keep an eye out for it! Cargo pants are the shoulder pads and legwarmers of the 90's - not meant to make a return to fashion, ever!

great blog btw
