Platform shoes

Are the ‘Spice Girls’ back? I know they recently returned to our televisions and radio stations after falling of the face of the earth a couple of years ago, but has their fashion returned to haunt us all? Don’t get me wrong. I was a totally obsessed Spice Girl fan back in the day and treasure all their merchandise still to this day. I loved the fact that they pranced around in glitzy tiny dresses, wore massive leather shoes (except for ‘sporty spice’ of course), wore random accessories and always managed to pull it all off without a hitch. However, I am pretty sure that after reading many of their books (which, may I add, were very intellectually stimulating at the age of 9) that these clothes were costumes and were worn simply to reinforce their individual identities and worn at appearances for a bit of fun. What do I see now waltzing down Swanston Street in Melbourne – imitation ‘Spice Girls’ – that’s what! It breaks my heart! I was extremely appalled at the young woman walking down Swanston Street sporting a massive pair of white platform shoes with a pair of pale pink, knee-high, ‘hello-kitty’ socks. The shoes were lace-ups and were not knee-high. They looked like a white sneaker with a very thick base, which was at least a good 10cm high. What on earth possessed you to buy those shoes, is the question? I am not sure – was she trying to achieve height? Did she feel inferior because of this and so she felt that the only way she could fix this was to spend her cash on a pair of ‘ginger’, ‘baby’ or ‘scary’-spice shoes? I am not really sure of the answer to this. Wrong move lady. It has been at least over a good decade ago that those 5 incredible women overtook the world with their ability to entertain others. Even then, I do not recall platform shoes being worn around the streets of Melbourne, unless they were concealed under trousers…Sneaky – is all I can say to that extreme! Seriously, could you imagine yourself strutting around the fashion capital of Melbourne with your platform shoes embracing your feet in the middle of the day? I just sat here for a moment to think of what the hell I could possibly wear with them… I must clarify that there is a difference between the ‘platforms’ and the ‘wedge’. Sure wedges are cool. They allow for a certain defined shape to the heels of your shoes, however platforms do not. They simply make you appear as if you are walking on a pair of bricks, which you stole from a construction site and then magically strapped them to your ordinary pair of shoes. Disgraceful... I just thought it was a shocking choice of footwear and don’t even get me started on the outfit! I have no intentions of opening that can of worms – I would be here all day.
