Stylish Sweatbands

With the Australian Open for 2011 in full swing comes the assortment of sweatbands, bandannas, frocks and socks.
Back in the day the tradition was to wear white on the court. A clean and sterile game has, over the years, resulted in a colourful circus of frills and spills – Wimbeldon the only exception.
This year we have seen an interesting compilation of various ensembles from our favourite tennis stars – some more of a hit than others – pardon the pun.
Colours that have definitely made an appearance on the blue surface have been fuchsia, pomegranate, lime green, yellow and lots of dove grey and indigo.
Boys and girls alike have put hours into designing their court costumes where they display stamina and precision – all while keeping sponsors happy.
Clearly Williams is the prime example of a failed wardrobe. Her canary yellow and fitted singlet with the lattice pattern has been said to be a prime surface for the growing of vine leaves.
The skin coloured shorts underneath the extremely short, shiny and flowy skirt made for interesting viewing for the lines people calling the shots. Sweat and what appeared to be vinyl is not the best mix. Playing a whole tennis match with one earring is also ridiculous.
Contrast this to Petkovic and Sharapova who were sporting a lovely green and pomegranate dress and a dove grey and coral number respectively puts other tennis stars to shame.
White was a preferred outfit from Schiavone and our very own Stosur while Ivanovic sought to smash the yellow furry item in a cute two-tone fuschia dress with the standard singlet style wrapped around the torso.
Straps, criss-cross marks and many tan lines does not detract from the pretty jewels that adorn the wrists, fingers, ears and necks of the cashed-up chicks.
Long, short and studs all makes for designer jewellery making its appearance on Centre Court. Bling is all out in force and it is definitely making a statement. Still – I can’t fathom running around a tennis court for four hours with chandeliers dangling away.
The money game featuring the likes of Adidas, Nike, Lacoste, Puma, Lotto and Fila to name a few love to splash the cash – but there is always a catch.
Bright colours suck us in so it is no surprise that summer sports is full of rainbow colours which screams attention, fun and most of all dedication – well if you’re a tennis player that is.
