What's on your feet is what counts

March 23rd 2008 07:49
"What are you wearing" is a question I commonly ask myself when surrounded by people who we can safely say are fashion illiterate! It is social suicide in a place dominated by designer brands and bright colours to prance around in the street wearing something that should be reserved for retirement. The other night I was out on Brunswick Street and to my horror I saw quite a scary site. I do not understand girls who wear goregous skirts or dresses and then team them up with either 'vans' or some other shoe that should not be exposed in public...Like what was this young girl thinking? Was she trying to class up her hiking outfit or was she suffering from a foot or leg issue which only permitted her to wear flat runners under a not-so-bad-looking high wasted skirt. This I could understand. ( I also must bare in mind the shoe issue would not have been financially related!)...I realise I was in the middle of Brunswick Street but I feel it had gone way too far. It wasn't a pair of plain white lace-ups she was sporting under the high waisted skirt - instead a checkered pair of 'vans' with no laces...Honestly - it was not the best look, infact - i was a little bit stunned as to why none of her friends helped her out or offered another suggestion regarding her footwear...It was beyond me! The first thing I look at is shoes on someone. It's ridiculous i know and have been told by many people that it is strange habit. Although I do predict shoes are a good indicator of whether or not you are intune with the fashion world... Is it buckles, laces, elastic or velcro that you should be wearing on any particular day? I say- whatever matches your outfit. Sure you can mix it up a bit but going over the top and trying too hard can sometimes land you in a fashion dilemma and you looking worse than you initially intended. Therefore...wearing 'vans' or any other odd sort of shore under a high-waisted skirt is definetly a big no-no...I would have confiscated them if I had had the chance as punishment for that shocking crime...She would have looked much more classier if she was sipping that alcolic beverage barefoot! (maybe a bit of rehab would have done the trick)

You can always judge a person (or unidentified species) by its shoes...simple as that.
