Word of the day

June 30th 2011 06:06
I used to have this joke at my previous job where everyday there would be a ‘word of the day’. Usually it was a tough word (or one that many people didn’t actually know the meaning to) and one that would rarely be used in any normal context. The aim of the game was to use it in as many sentences as you could throughout the day.

Boy I wish I had known this one – it really would have made things interesting.

I came across a new word the other day – ‘pleather’. Aside from the fact that I had no idea what the word meant, what was more concerning was that my not-so-fashionista boyfriend introduced the word to me.

While checking out some photos of a party he attended over the weekend, he made the comment that a couple of this mates were stirring up another one of his friends for sporting his ‘pleather jacket’. It turns out this dude wears it wherever and whenever he can – I myself have witnessed him in spring with this jacket and have often wondered if it gets toasty.

Anyway my manfriend continued to scroll through the photos, chuckling here and there while I sat there clearly looking confused. After about ten minutes, I said, “Sorry what was that word?” He had no idea what I was talking about. So I started making up what I thought I had heard (which was not pleather at all).

After he tried to tell me that it was the name given to a fake leather jacket I did not believe him. I had never heard of it in my life – sure I had heard of vinyl but pleather? Really? Usually people go around sniffing leather jackets to make sure they are ‘real’. I personally have never done that but it has made me wonder from time to time if I should.

So he whips out the iPhone and starts Googling ‘pleather’. In the end I believed him and Google still continues to astound me as I keep reading things about this material.

Apparently pleather jackets are made of plastic and oil – and are cruelty free. Seems ok on the surface. (I am not too sure about how the environment will go with all this pleather floating around).

Hmm... I haven’t delved into it too much because I am still getting my head around the fact that my bf knew something about clothing - just in general. I have been thinking about it for the last few days and still can’t believe the word exists. I was also impressed because I discovered it can last just as long as a pure leather jacket. Man, they are sturdy and well worth the investment too!

Definitely learn something new every day – even if it is a super-small fact
